An old woman with grapes
Oil on panel
Dating to circa 1580, this small tondo is clearly inspired by the engraving of An Old Woman Holding Grapes by Lucas van Leyden, circa 1523. A fine example is in the Metropolitan Museum (66.613.26). Is she an allegorical of Autumn or a grotesque figure in the same vein as Leonardo's grotesque drawings done about 40 years earlier or indeed Quentin Maasys' 'Ugly Duchess' of 1513 now in the National Gallery, London?
