Fratin's masterful hand is exemplified in this particular cast though the fine modelling with a great sense of proportion and confirmation and a clear understanding of a horse’s anatomy. Fratin studied sculpture under the artist Charles Augustin Pioche (1762 - 1839). He then moved to Paris where he was accepted as a pupil of the painter Gericault. Fratin first exhibited his work at the Paris Salon as early as 1831. He was, alongside Barye and Mine, an important member of 'Les Animaliers'.
