Property of a Gentleman.

The River Tees at Barnard Castle with a Gentleman Flyfishing and a Gentleman Flighting and other Figures at Sunset
. Attributed to John Wilson Ewbank. Oil on canvas. In gilded frame.

John Wylson Ewbank was born in Darlington, Durham on 4th May 1799 to Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted by his wealthy uncle who lived on the banks of the river Tees at Wycliffe, a short carriage ride from Bernard Castle, the subject of this painting.

Ewbank it is said, showed great skill in drawing from the age of 4 which increased with his age leading him to become apprentice to an ornamental painter in Newcastle called Thomas Coulson whom he later accompanied to Edinburgh in 1816. It was here, on the advise of Coulson, that he took lessons with Alexander Nasmyth.

His painting flourished and, although he mainly painted Landscapes and marines, he also produced a number of successful history paintings like "The King's Entry into Edinburgh" which he exhibited at the Royal Institution and sold for 120 guineas.
