An 18th Century Sevres Porcelain Plate with an indented ‘Sevres blue’ rim, gold gilding and floral motifs. Sevres interlaced LL’s on the underside.
Marking: Painted in blue enamel on underside: [1] Crossed Ls enclosing 2 (Sèvres factory mark); [2] L.B (attributed to Jean-Nicolas Le Bel)
18th Century Sevres porcelain is identifiable by its bright, vivid colour palette, commonly incorporating the distinctive dark, inky blue commonly known as bleu Sèvres, or ‘Sevres blue’. Until 1780, the Sevres manufacturers had the total monopoly in France on painting porcelain in more than one colour. Pinks, greens, gold, white and, of course, blue all featured prominently on Sevres pieces.
