Iznik/Ottoman
15th/16th Century
A group of tile fragments
The tile sections decorated in raised red, cobalt blue, turquoise, green, brown and black outline. With tulips, prunus blossom, sax leaves and carnations, the frame with applied openwork foliate decoration and inscriptions.
For a similar group of tiles, please refer to Victoria and Albert Museum, Tile Panel, c. 1580. Accession number 401..1TO24-1900.

The tiles were produced at the Iznik potteries, Istanbul. The Imperial Court renewed its patronage of Iznik ceramics during the construction of the Suleymaniyi Mosque in Istanbul 1550 - 1557. The first Iznik tiles were produced, and potters added a bright red to the range of colours painted under the glaze. This was achieved with a slip made from a special clay. In the following decades, tiles of high quality were decorated in red, green and tones of blue on a white ground.
