Marmaduke Cradock (1660 - 1716)
A brace of pheasants, a curlew and other birds in an evening landscape
Signed in full centre right
Oil on canvas, in a fine Georgian carved and gilded frame
The present work offers a great insight into the artist, being one of only three known signed oil paintings in private collections. The more ‘anamoly’ depictions of birds most frequently associated with Cradock are put into doubt when viewed against this and the other two signed examples by the artist. Little is known of Cradock’s early life or artistic training, yet his legacy endures through the small but notable body of work which remains, primarily consisting of landscapes with birds, both exotic and domestic. He is highly regarded for his skillful handling of light and atmosphere, as evidenced in the present work, which injects the natural world with a marvellous sense of the theatrical.
