£2,200
A Pair of George I silver tapersticks. Each on a square base with in-curved angles, with baluster stem, vase-shaped socket, and quatrefoil borders. Each with hallmarks, date-marks. By Joseph Bird, 1724.
Condylis Collection
4 1/8 in (H)
Previously sold £3800 (1996).
Marking:
[1] Lion passant (English quality mark for sterling);
[2] Leopard's head crowned (London assay office mark);
[3] I (London date letter for 1724);
[4] I B (Maker's mark for Joseph Bird).
The cast decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each base are all very clear; the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
