A Thangkar depicting a teacher and deities in a hilly landscape
Pigment on linen (?)
This Thangkar appears to be Mongolian in the widest sense. Some colours appear to have been lost due to deterioration, giving it a very unusual colour scheme. The main figure most likely is a a local teacher and his wisdom is emphasised through his attributes of sword and book. The painting is of a Gelukpa school context (the hats would have been yellow originally) and associated with the monastery depicted in the upper area. The deities, Hayagriva in the top left, the protector Dorje Legpa riding a goat and a form of Mahakala, another protector, are also speaking for a localised context. The landscape in the back with the hills made of parallel line compares to painting of the late Qing.
