Property of a Gentleman.
Pastoral Wooded Landscape. Oil on canvas. Attributed to Pierre-Henri De Valenciennes (1750-1819). Pierre-Henri De Valenciennes was a well established name among the French painters colony in Rome. He was heavily influenced by the works of Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and was a leading upholder of classical landscape painting and even argued for the category to be raised to that of historical painting.
Valenciennes was also know for his development of the concept of the 'Landscape Portait' which he would teach his students at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He encouraged artists to look deeper into the world around them and at various styles of buildings, costumes, local materials and even agriculture in order to give a sense of a particular place.
