Lot Essay:
This example of Permeniates' work reflecting the profound influence of Carpaccio on the Cretan's iconographic style gives us a window into the world of early 16th century artistic influences in Venice.
Ioannis Permeniates was inscribed as a member of the Greek Confraternity in Venice in 1523. Another important member of the Cretan-Venetian artistic community was, of course, El Greco.
