Dominic Serres was born in Germany and was originally apprenticed to one of Frances best known painters, Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). He came to England as a prisoner of war in 1752, having been captured at sea. During his captivity he took up painting and his early works were so successful that he was retained by George II as the official naval artist to the Crown from 1780. Throughout his career he painted a series of interesting historical events including the capture of Havana in 1762 and also the American Revolutionary War.
