A Pair of Arcadian Landscapes

Born in Chichester, Sussex in 1756 Abraham Pether would go on to become an extremely talented landscape painter as well as a musician, inventor, mathematician and philosopher. He was a student of George Smith of Chichester (1714-1776) a well known neo-classical painter from the area. He took to painting like a duck to water and greatly surpassed the skill of his master.
Pether exhibited majorly at both the Incorporated society of artist and the Free Society of Artists from 1773 to 1791 and at the Royal Academy from 1784 to 1881. He became famous for his precise depictions of moonlit scenes and even built his own telescopes to observe the night sky.
