Lot Essay:
The present work is a study for Shee's 1794 self-portrait which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1795 (National Portrait Gallery collection).
Shee first studied in Dublin before settling in London in 1788 where he studied briefly at the RA Schools in 1790. He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1798 and a full Academician in 1800. In 1830, on Lawrence’s death, he succeeded as President of the Royal Academy and was knighted.
