Property of a distinguished Gentleman
Gelupka School (Tibet)
Late 18th Century (?)
A Thangka depicting Buddha Amitayus, the Buddha of Endless Life
Pigment on linen (?)
Buddha Amitayus is flanked by Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. The style is typical for Central Tibet and the Gelukpa School. The two teachers at the top appear to represent the Sakya and Geluk schools, which makes it likely that it has been commissioned in a private context and the inscription at the bottom appears to be a dedication. In the bottom corners are Ushnishavijaya, a long-life goddess, and a form of Penden/Palden Lhamo, a female protector.
