Simultaneous intaglio print on paper
Stanley William Hayter established the renowned Atelier 17 (originally conceived in Paris in 1933) in New York in the early 1940s to continue the radical innovation in engraving and print making for which the Atelier was famous. During this period, Hayter developed a method of producing the first simultaneous intaglio and surface colour print, which he debuted with Cinq Personnages in 1946.
Inscribed 'Fourth State Colour Trial', the present work is one of four or more trial proofs aside from the 50 editions, many of which are held in museums or public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Smithsonian.
