A pair of Qing Dynasty Chinese carved high relief jade ‘double gourds’ with creeping foliate, one with a spider and a bee and the other with spider. Finely worked in the round. With finely worked gilded silver mountings. The bottom has a striker. Probably 17th century. Converted into lighters by Maison Maquet in mid 19th century.
The Maquet brothers, Hector and Charles, established Maison Maquet in 1841. Renowned Parisian luxury houses, Maison Maquet became official purveyor to Empress Eugenie as well as to other royal courts, winning multiple awards and medals over the course of its history for their fine designs.
