Lot Essay:
Balthasar Beschey, born in Antwerp in 1708, was a student of Pieter Strick, and painted in the styles of Van Balen and De Craever. He was admitted as a freeman of the Guild of St. Luke in 1753 and in 1755 he became one of the six directors of the Antwerp Academy of Arts. The next year he was elected Dean of St. Luke. He died in 1776 while holding the post of professor in the Academy.
The subjects of his mature works were primarily portraits and sacred history. There are examples of his work in the Antwerp Museum, The Louvre and the Hermitage.
