Witold Gracjan Kawalec was born in Poland in 1922. He studied carving art Nottingham University College and opened his own studio in 1951. He began working in alabaster, and later created work out of various metals. The themes of his sculptures are based on his experience as a soldier in the Polish forces and later an RAF fighter pilot in WWII. He is best known for his St Christopher sculpture for Dame Cicely Saunders’s St Christopher's Hospice at Sydenham. Kawalec's work was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
