Alfred Barye was born in Paris on January 21st 1839, the son of the master of the animalier school, Antoine-Louis. He exhibited at the salon from 1864 until 1882. Although his speciality was racehorses, during this time he produced a wide range of sculpture depicting genre scenes, birds and wild animals. This is probably Alfred Barye’s most accomplished work. Often overshadowed by his talented father, Antoine, Alfred was a good sculptor who produced a solid body of work that was exhibited at the Paris Salons. His signature changes from piece to piece, sometimes indicating that he is the son of Antoine Barye by the addition of the word fils’. In this example the sculpture is simply signed Barye and consequently has sometimes been confused as the work of the father.
