Mosheh Oved (Polish-Jewish, 1885 - 1958)
A silver and gold anthropomorphic ring
Designed as a stylised bird clasping foliage in a gold beak, of a hammered design
Provenance:
Purchased by the current owner's mother, Cameo Corner, Bloomsbury, 1943
Mosheh Oved originally intended to become a Rabbi, but eventually trained as a watchmaker based at Fetter Lane, Holborn. In 1938 Oved opened Cameo Corner at No. 26 Museum Street, Bloomsbury. The shop was patronised by royalty, including Queen Mary, connoisseurs, collectors and dealers. During the war, whilst sheltering in the basement of the shop during the Blitz, Oved first began modelling rings to steady his trembling hands. His unique anthropomorphic jewellery is highly sought after today, a charming menagerie of animals and birds displaying human characteristics.
Oved developed a good reputation for selling rare and unusual jewellery. He was an equally colourful character, often dressing in a purple velvet robe and an imposing amethyst pendant. He was a great authority on cameos, as well as a poet, writer and sculptor.
