An Indian Miniature of the Madonna and Child with Angels (?)
Mughal India (?)
17th/18th Century (?)
On paper

This image is an example of an iconography resulting from the assimilation of Catholic ideologies into the Mughal court style within India.

The Jesuits have had a presence in India since the sixteenth century and generally treated their mission encounters as a dialogue instead of a harangue. As such, the Jesuits earned a reputation as skilled debaters and were welcomed into the royal Mughal courts.

The resulting encounters yielded syncretic images in which Mughal artists deftly and selectively integrated European subjects as well as stylistic conventions and pictorial realism. Mughal-produced art influenced by Catholic art ranged from iconic representations of Jesus and Mary to a panoply of Christian saints and angels.
