Marcello Leopardi (Italian, 1750-1795)
Joseph's coat of many colours is shown to his father Jacob
Oil on canvas
Marcello Leopardi was born in Potenza Picena in about 1750. He was trained under Sebastiano Conca and Stefano Pozzi and became a member of the Accademia di San Luca at an early age. His work is an example of Roman neo-classicism, and very much influenced by earlier Roman baroque painters and the likes of Angelika Kauffman, as well as academic French neo-classicism.
The biblical scene depicted is of Jacob's coat of many colours, which he makes for his favourite son, Joseph. Joseph's jealous brothers sell him to some Ishmaelites and show Jacob the coat, dipped in goat's blood, as proof that Joseph is dead.
